Then known as the Houston Junior College, the Institute conducted its early classes on the San Jacinto High School campus. With tremendous growth, the College attained the status of a university to become the University of Houston in 1934.

Notable alumni of CLASS include Kristen Ames Box (VP of recruiting at Roch Resources), Robert Kramp (vice president and director of the national research and client services group of Grubb and Ellis company) and Adriana Lopez (anchor, co-producer and editor at China Central Television).

Life at the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences

The University of Houston campus offers a wide range of experiences, including dining, art displays, recreational amenities, live entertainment, and sports activities. At the core of student life is the Student Hub, which serves as the central hub that houses student organisations, study and social spaces, a bustling food court, shops, IT services, and a game room to keep the community connected and engaged. Lynn Eusan Park, located at the heart of the Campus, provides a peaceful escape and hosts performances throughout the year.

Students can enhance their college experience by joining student organisations related to their major or professional interests. The Campus Recreation and Wellness Center features a well-equipped 24,000 sq ft Fitness Zone with modern equipment. The Functional Training Studio is accessible by joining the Personal Training Programme.

The University of Houston provides on-campus housing in seven distinct residential areas, each offering comprehensive student services. Students can choose from Cougar Village I, Cougar Village II, Moody Towers, University Lofts, and apartment complexes like Bayou Oaks, Cambridge Oaks, and Cullen Oaks.

The Cougar Ride After-Hours Shuttle Service, part of the Transportation & Security Work Group's initiatives, offers convenient transportation to and from the Campus shuttle stops, MD Anderson Library, and Cougar Village or Moody Towers. Parking and Transportation Services offer benefits to UH community members who carpool with three or more people, providing discounted permits and prime parking spots. Students can also join COAST (Coogs on Alternative and Sustainable Transportation) to earn rewards for carpooling or using eco-friendly transportation. The Cougar Line transportation system offers free rides within the Campus and reduced fares for off-campus commuting.

Additional benefits of studying at the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences

The Media and Moving Image Initiative at the University of Houston brings together and makes better the University's creative and critical programmes in art, literature, and media. They have a bunch of resources, like film production and research at the Valenti School of Communications, a certificate in Cinema Studies from the World and Classical Languages department, and art, music, theatre, and digital media programmes in the College of the Arts and the College of Technology.
