About the school

The University of New Mexico School of Engineering, founded in 1906, stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Established by the New Mexico Territorial Legislature in 1889, UNM is the state's second oldest university, and its School of Engineering has evolved over the years into a prominent institution renowned for its contributions to education and research.

From its beginnings with just two faculty members and a single classroom, the UNM School of Engineering has grown into a dynamic and innovative hub of learning and discovery. Over time, it has adapted to the ever-changing landscape of technology and society, transitioning from traditional lectures to cutting-edge learning technologies.

Today, it stands at the forefront of engineering education and research, proudly holding the distinction of being the highest-ranked engineering program in New Mexico. Moreover, it is one of the select few universities in the nation classified as a Carnegie R1 institution, placing it in the elite company of institutions like MIT, Stanford, and Purdue.
